Chapter 14
Darek
The floor was covered with dried blood and maggots, and the stench in the air was enough to trigger Darekâs gag reflex at least once. Whatever Max had done there, it had been done days ago.
Bayâs face had gone as pale as his hair, and Darek wondered if something had finally gotten to him.
âIâll look around,â Darek said. âYou might not want to see whatâs here to find.â
He walked to the back of the storage unit, which had tons of furniture and a lot of old boxes. Some were open, their contents scattered on top of the other boxes. There was a place in the back where the blood had gotten thicker, and Darekâs suspicions were that it wasnât really from a human.
âSomething isnât adding up. Either he slaughtered three or four people, or this blood was deliberately put here for us to find. The key was probably a set up too. Lizzy found it sitting right on top of a box. The blood is so old. Max could have done it before we picked him up.â
âWhatâs this guyâs fucking problem? Heâs leading us in circles and wasting our fucking time.â Bay looked down at his shoes. âFuck.â The soles were stained with the thick mush.
âHeâs trying to fuck with us.â Darek walked over to one of the boxes, filled with dildos. âLook at this shit. The manâs worse off than I ever imagined.â
âHeâs telling us to go fuck ourselves,â said Bay. âThatâs all this is. One big head fuck. Heâs probably laughing right now and hoping we found it. He hasnât got any fucking intention of telling us where she is. I want you to let me talk to him.â
Darek shook his head. âIf heâs not going to tell us, then why bother? You just want to take a crack at him, and Iâm not letting you fuck everything up now. If you do that, he wins.â
âFuck that!â Bay didnât like the idea of anyone else beating him. âHe wonât win. Heâll end up with a fucking bullet or a shank, but he wonât win!â Bay pointed his finger at Darek, jabbing it in his direction like he wanted to poke an eye out.
Darek sighed. âOkay, I get it. But I canât give you the opportunity to take him out, and thatâs all there is to it.â Bay was likely to rile Max up so much that he went to Lizzy with the truth. Why he hadnât sung his song already was a mystery, but Darek knew he was waiting for the right time. The last thing he needed was Bay going in and making things worse.
Bay walked over to one of the boxes. âMaybe thereâs another clue. There has to be something here, just like there was at his house.â He turned out another box, this time finding a pair of fur-lined handcuffs and a box of womenâs clothing. âLooks like the asshole really did have a woman in his life.â
âWhat are you talking about? Heâs never had a steady chick.
